A boutique resort in Uluwatu, Bali

VELA Uluwatu is a small, design-led boutique resort in Pecatu, on Bali’s Uluwatu, twelve rammed-earth lodges in a botanical grove, 3 minutes from Suluban Beach, 5 from Padang Padang and 25 from the airport, yet tucked away from the crowds.

If you are searching for a quiet boutique hotel in Uluwatu, not a large resort, a party hostel or a villa complex, this page explains what VELA is, who it suits, what a stay costs and includes, and how it compares to other places to stay in Uluwatu.

What makes VELA a boutique resort

VELA has just two lodge types, the Observatory Villa (2 units, 48 m², from IDR 2.240.000/night) and the Earth-Pressed Studio Lodge (10 units, 28 m², from IDR 1.820.000/night), and a single quiet pool shared across the grove. It is intentionally small: no buffet halls, no queues, no scripted service.

Everything is built from natural materials, rammed earth, alang-alang thatch, lime and wood, and cooled by design rather than machines. The feel is closer to a boutique travel editorial than a hotel: warm ivory tones, linen, stone, and a lot of deliberate quiet.

Where it is, exactly

VELA sits on Jl. Pantai Suluban in Pecatu, Kuta Selatan, the limestone headland that forms Bali’s southern tip.

  • Suluban Beach (Blue Point). 3 minutes
  • Padang Padang Beach. 5 minutes
  • Bingin Beach & cliff cafés. 7 minutes
  • Uluwatu Temple & Kecak dance. 8 minutes
  • Ngurah Rai Airport (DPS). 25 minutes

Who it suits

Couples, solo travellers, surfers who value sleep, and design-minded guests who want to be near Uluwatu’s surf and cliffs while returning to somewhere still. The grove is adult-paced; children are welcome from age 12.

It is not the right base if you want nightlife on your doorstep. Single Fin is 8 minutes away when you want it, and pleasantly absent when you don’t.

What a stay includes

Every booking includes daily housekeeping, 200 Mbps WiFi, drinking water refilled daily, pool and grove access, a welcome tonic on arrival and personal concierge service. Breakfast (from IDR 150.000), surf sessions, private dinners and airport transfers can be added at booking.

Booking is direct and personal: choose dates online, and a real person confirms by email or WhatsApp within a day. Cancellation is free up to 7 days before arrival.

How it compares

Versus large Uluwatu resorts: far smaller, quieter and more personal, without spa buildings or crowds. Versus villa rentals: hotel-level daily service and a team on site. Versus Canggu or Seminyak hotels: a different island rhythm entirely, cliffs and stillness instead of traffic and beach clubs.

Good to know

Common questions.

Neither in the usual sense, it is a small boutique resort of standalone rammed-earth lodges within a shared grove, with hotel-style daily service but the privacy of a villa.

Twelve in total: the Observatory Villa (2 units) and the Earth-Pressed Studio Lodge (10 units). It stays quiet by design.

The Earth-Pressed Studio starts at IDR 1.820.000 per night and the Observatory Villa at IDR 2.240.000, including taxes and service. Weekends and July–August carry a modest uplift.

Suluban Beach is about 3 minutes away, Padang Padang 5 minutes and Bingin 7 minutes by scooter or car.

Each lodge sleeps two; children are welcome from age 12. For small groups we can arrange adjoining lodges within the grove.
