What rammed earth is
Local earth, sand, clay and a little stabiliser, is compacted into formwork layer by layer until it holds the density of soft stone and the striped colour of the land itself. Nothing is painted or clad; the wall you touch is the structure. Each lodge at VELA took weeks of hand-ramming, and no two walls carry the same strata.
Why it suits Bali’s climate
Thick earth walls have high thermal mass: they absorb the day’s heat slowly and release it after dark, holding the interior several degrees below the afternoon outside. Paired with alang-alang thatch roofs and cross-ventilation, the lodges stay naturally cool through the midday, most guests never touch the fan before evening.
It is also honest sustainability rather than a badge: the material is dug locally, uses a fraction of concrete’s cement, needs no paint or plaster, and returns to the ground at end of life.
What it feels like to stay in
Grounded is the word guests use most. The walls mute the outside world the way a cave does, softly, completely, so nights are dark and genuinely silent. Surfaces are tactile: warm earth, cool stone floors, lime-washed bathrooms, linen that moves in the breeze.
